If you ask three vendors for AI voice agent pricing, you'll get three different answers, all complicated, none directly comparable. We are going to fix that.
Here is the full pricing picture for 2026: per-minute economics, monthly cost by call volume, side-by-side vendor comparison, the hidden fees that hit after the contract is signed, and a worked ROI example you can run on your own business.
The per-minute number that matters
AI voice agent pricing in 2026 sits between $0.50 and $1.20 per active minute across most platforms. Waboom runs at $0.80 NZD or $0.73 AUD per minute on the standard tier.
Active minute means a minute with audio actually flowing through the agent. A call that rings out and connects to nothing does not bill. A call that lasts 47 seconds bills you for 1 minute (most platforms round up to the nearest minute).
The $0.80 number combines three underlying costs:
Add platform margin and that lands at $0.80. Some vendors break these out and quote you "$0.30 per minute" for just the LLM portion, then surprise you with separate telephony and TTS line items. The all-in rate is the only one that matters.
Monthly cost by call volume
Average call length on a tuned AI voice agent is around 30 seconds. That works out to roughly $0.40 per call at the $0.80/min rate.
| Business profile | Calls per month | Estimated monthly cost (NZD) |
|---|---|---|
| Solo trade, after-hours overflow | 100 | $40 |
| Small clinic or practice | 350 | $140 |
| Mid-size trade business | 850 | $340 |
| High-volume contact-centre overflow | 2,200 | $880 |
| Multi-site healthcare or property group | 6,500 | $2,600 |
These are usage-based estimates at $0.40 per call. Most platforms also offer subscription plans that bundle minutes at a discount.
Waboom's structure:
If your monthly volume sits between 200 and 1,500 calls (100 to 750 minutes), pay-as-you-go is the simpler option. Over that, subscription is cheaper.
Want the number for your specific volume?
The live ROI calculator takes your monthly call count, your industry, and your current cost-per-call (or missed-call cost), and returns a single-line monthly figure plus a payback estimate. The after-hours calculator is simpler if you only care about evening + weekend coverage.
Or skip the spreadsheet and try a sample agent first.
NZ vs AU pricing
The underlying components cost roughly the same in both markets. The local price difference is mostly the FX between NZD and AUD.
Waboom pricing:
Some Australian-only platforms quote in USD, which translates to roughly 1.5x the AUD-quoted equivalents. Worth checking the currency on the quote before you sign.
Both NZ and AU benefit from local-currency parity (no FX volatility surprise on the invoice). Waboom invoices in your business's currency, not the vendor's.
The three pricing models you will see
Across the AI voice agent market, vendors land on one of three structures.
Pay as you go. Buy a credit, use it down, top up. No commitment. Higher per-minute rate. Best for testing, very low volume, or campaign-only use. Waboom $500 NZD starter sits here.
Monthly subscription with bundled minutes. A bundle of minutes at a discount, billed monthly. Typical commitment is month-to-month with 30 days notice. Best for predictable volume. Waboom Starter at $990 NZD/mo for 1,000 minutes sits here.
Per-minute enterprise with annual commitment. Volume-discounted active-minute pricing for high-volume operators (5,000+ minutes/month). Often comes with a minimum monthly commitment and a 12-month term. Best for established outbound campaigns or large multi-site healthcare operations. Waboom Scale tier sits here.
Avoid annual lock-ins on a category this new. Move month-to-month so you can swap vendors when the technology improves (and it improves quarterly in 2026). The only reason to commit to a year is to get a meaningful price break (typically 15-20% off list).
Waboom vs Retell direct vs Vapi vs ReceptionHQ vs offshore
The most common question we get: "Why pay Waboom $0.80/min when Retell direct is $0.30/min?". Here's the honest answer.
| Option | Per-minute / per-call | What you get | What you do not get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waboom | $0.80/min NZD | Agent + Smart Booster + phone health + DNC auto-detection + CRM webhooks + multilingual + Privacy Act compliance + portal + ANZ support | Direct API tinkering at the model level |
| Retell direct | $0.30/min USD | Conversational AI engine, raw API, you build everything else | Phone health, anti-spam, DNC, CRM integration, compliance, support, portal, multilingual orchestration |
| Vapi | $0.30-$0.40/min USD | Developer-grade voice infrastructure, dashboard, broad model support | Same gaps as Retell direct, plus less ANZ-specific compliance |
| ReceptionHQ | $1.99 per call overage on $19/mo plan | Human receptionist, ANZ accents, 22 years operation | 24/7 with no surcharge, concurrent calls, multilingual, CRM beyond Clio + Keap, sub-second response |
| Offshore call centre (Manila/Cebu) | $7-$15 per call | Cheap labour, scaled headcount | ANZ accents, NZ Privacy Act compliance, integration depth, response time consistency, brand alignment |
| In-house receptionist (NZ) | $35-$45K/yr loaded part-time, $52-$70K full-time | Human warmth, in-person presence, broad role coverage | 24/7 coverage, scaling without hiring, consistency on volume |
The Retell-direct vs Waboom question is the same as Bunnings vs hiring a builder. Bunnings sells you the lumber for less. The builder costs more because you also get the design, the sequencing, the council inspections, the warranty, and someone to call when the deck collapses. If you have an in-house team that can build the platform around the agent (and ship it without breaking compliance), Retell direct will save you money. If you do not, the platform layer pays for itself many times over.
We covered the platform layer in detail in inside the Waboom portal if you want to understand what is under the $0.50/min difference.
Hidden fees to ask about
Vendor pricing pages publish the headline rate. The line items that show up after the contract:
The cleanest test: ask the vendor "what is the all-in cost for 1,000 calls a month, 30 seconds each, 200 of them outside business hours, 50 with warm transfer, with HubSpot integration?". A vendor who can give you a single number is being honest. A vendor who needs three days to get back to you is hiding something in the line items.
Worked ROI example
A real worked example. Christchurch dental practice, 6 dentists, takes around 350 calls a month. Currently 22% of those calls hit voicemail because reception is short-staffed at peaks. Average new-patient lifetime value is $2,400 across 8 visits over 3 years.
Current state:
With Waboom AI receptionist (Starter $990/mo, 1,000 minutes):
ROI math:
Even if you cut the conversion assumption in half (because some of those callers would have eventually called back), the ROI is still 30x with a 24-day payback. The pricing question is not "is it worth it". The pricing question is "why am I not running this already".
We covered similar maths for trades businesses in how much does an AI receptionist cost and for outbound sales in what is an AI sales agent.
How to evaluate before signing
A buyer's checklist. Run this on every vendor before you commit.
1. Get the all-in monthly cost for your specific volume profile, in writing.
2. Listen to a real demo tuned on your business, not a generic one. Vendors who will not tune a demo for you in a week are not invested.
3. Confirm sub-800ms turn latency. Anything slower will sound off on a real call. We covered the engineering in mastering voice AI latency.
4. Check CRM integration. Native HubSpot, Pipedrive, Salesforce, Zoho, GoHighLevel, or whatever you use. Webhook-only is a yellow flag (means more dev work).
5. Confirm data residency if you are in healthcare, finance, or government. Cross-border processing has compliance implications under NZ Privacy Act IPP 12 and the AU APPs.
6. Read the cancel terms. Month-to-month, no exit fees. Annual lock-in is a red flag in 2026.
7. Ask about the platform. What do you get beyond the agent? Phone health, DNC auto-detection, holiday-aware scheduling, audit logs. Vendors that only sell you the agent are not building a platform.
8. Verify ANZ compliance posture. NZ Privacy Act 2020 + Australian Privacy Principles statements should be public, not on request. We covered both in voice AI compliance for NZ + AU.
A good vendor walks all of these with you in week one. A bad vendor needs a sales call and three follow-ups to get you to the all-in number.
Frequently asked questions
Why does AI voice cost more per minute than ChatGPT API?
ChatGPT API charges per token. AI voice charges per minute because every minute combines token-based LLM costs with per-second telephony, per-character TTS, and per-second STT. The all-in cost compounds. $0.80 per minute is roughly 5x the LLM-only cost.
Are there free AI receptionists?
A handful of platforms offer free tiers capped at 50-100 minutes/month. Useful for proof of concept, not for production. The free tiers usually exclude integrations, recording, and support.
Is there a setup fee on Waboom?
No. Sign up, build the agent, go live. We bill per-minute or per-subscription only. Custom integrations beyond our standard list are quoted separately.
What about international calls?
Inbound calls to your registered local number are billed at standard rates. International outbound calls are metered at carrier rates (a few cents per minute extra over the standard). The platform layer cost is the same regardless of caller location.
Can I cap my monthly spend?
Yes. Waboom lets you set a monthly active-minute ceiling. The agent stops accepting new calls when the cap hits and routes them to your human team or voicemail with a custom message. Most clients leave the cap off because the value of every captured call exceeds the per-minute cost.
How long is the typical contract?
Month-to-month on Starter and most Growth setups. Annual options on Scale with a small discount (15% off list).
What happens if I exceed my plan minutes?
Overage bills at the same per-minute rate as your plan tier. No price gouging on overage rates.
Is GST included in the quoted prices?
No. NZD prices are GST exclusive (15% NZ GST added on invoice). AUD prices are GST exclusive (10% AU GST added on invoice).
Do I pay for inbound and outbound separately?
No. Same per-minute rate regardless of direction. Outbound campaigns may need a dedicated phone number for warming, which is the small monthly number-rental cost mentioned earlier.
Can I get a custom quote for high volume?
Yes. If you are running more than 5,000 monthly minutes, we'll quote a Scale tier with volume discount. Talk to us at contact.
