What is a Japanese AI receptionist?
A Japanese AI receptionist answers your business phone in Japanese or English, so callers can ask a question, make a booking or leave a message without waiting for a staff member.
Waboom AI's Japanese receptionist is Yuki, who speaks polite standard Japanese and follows callers who switch between Japanese and English during the call. Call handling is set up around your business, with handover to your staff and booking through your own workflows. Built for businesses across New Zealand and Australia.

Where Japanese-language phone answering helps
When a Japanese-speaking caller is answered in polite Japanese, making a booking or asking a question is easier for them and for your team.

Tours, ski fields and activities
Tour times, lift and lesson bookings, pick-up points, weather updates you approve, and golf tee times. The receptionist takes the booking in Japanese and follows the caller if they switch to English for a place name.

Hotels, lodges and restaurants
Room and table bookings, check-in times, directions and approved menu questions, answered in Japanese during a busy service or overnight.

Homestays and education
Students, parents and agents asking about courses, intakes and homestay arrangements. The receptionist answers the approved questions and books a call with your student team.

Real estate
Buyers and investors asking about listings and viewings. The receptionist takes the property address and contact details and books a viewing or a callback from the agent.
How we set up your Japanese AI receptionist
Three steps. We do the heavy lifting.
Tell us about your callers
Which languages they speak, what they call about, and what a good call ends with: a booking, a message or a transfer.
We build and test it in Japanese
Your greeting, hours, services and booking rules in English and Japanese, tested on calls with your own names and places.
Go live on your number
Forward your existing number. Every call comes with a transcript and summary, and we keep improving it.
What makes Japanese-language calls different?
Speaking Japanese well on the phone takes more than translating English sentences.
A standard Japanese voice
Yuki speaks standard Japanese (標準語), the form callers from every region of Japan know. There is no regional voice, such as a Kansai accent. Before go-live we run test calls with your own callers so you can hear how it handles their speech.
Keigo by default
Yuki speaks polite Japanese in the です・ます form and uses honorifics such as 様 when addressing callers. We can adjust the greeting and the level of formality to suit a hotel, a ski school or a real estate agency.
Japanese and English in the same call
Callers often switch to English for a street name, a tour name or a booking reference, or say a place like Queenstown as クイーンズタウン. The receptionist hears both languages in the same call and follows the caller back and forth. We test your own place names and product names before go-live.
Names and written messages
Japanese callers usually give their family name first, and the same kanji can be read several ways. We set the receptionist to confirm the name and how it is read. When it writes Japanese, it uses kanji and kana, never romaji.
An example call in Japanese
A caller books a Milford Sound day tour from Queenstown for two adults. Illustrative example, not a recording.

Japanese AI receptionist: common questions
Which Japanese accents does the AI receptionist speak?
One: Yuki speaks standard Japanese with a female voice. There is no regional voice, such as a Kansai accent. Before go-live we run test calls with your own callers so you can hear how it handles their speech.
Can callers switch between English and Japanese?
Yes. The receptionist hears Japanese and English in the same call. In our tests callers switched back and forth, and the agent followed them without being asked.
Does it understand phone numbers spoken in Japanese?
Yes. In our tests, phone numbers spoken in Japanese were transcribed correctly. The receptionist can still read a number back to the caller when your booking process needs that extra check.
Does it speak polite Japanese (keigo)?
Yes. It uses the polite です・ます form and honorifics such as 様 with every caller by default. We can adjust the greeting and the level of formality to suit your business.
Can I try a Japanese demo now?
Yes. Talk to the Japanese agent on this page, in your browser. Calls run for up to four minutes.
Can we keep our 1300 or 1800 number?
Yes. You keep your number and forward calls to the AI receptionist, all the time or only when you are busy, do not answer or are closed. A mobile number can forward the same way. You do not need a new number.
Can it transfer calls to our staff and send a summary?
Yes. It can put a caller through to a staff member's mobile when they need a person, and it sends a summary of every call to your team, with the transcript in your portal.
Can it give medical, legal or financial advice in Japanese?
No. In regulated industries the agent handles admin only: bookings, opening hours, directions and messages. Anything that needs advice goes to your qualified staff.
Does a Japanese receptionist cost more than English?
No. Japanese calls are charged at the same per-minute rate as English, from 95c a minute down to 77c in New Zealand and 71c in Australia. Credit never expires and every plan has a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Where is call data stored?
Transcripts, call records, contact details and billing are stored in Sydney. The live audio, recording files, speech processing and the language model run offshore. We meet cross-border accountability requirements through documented arrangements with our voice infrastructure partner.
